Job Description:

Camp Shane runs two specialized camps for overweight children in the Catskill Mountains of New York and in Mayer, Arizona. The objectives of the camp are for the campers to lose weight, learn new skills, gain self-esteem and have fun.

NUTRITIONIST JOB DESCRIPTION

The camp will hire several staff member to work as Nutrition Instructors / Counselors. You would need to have a solid background in Nutrition, feel comfortable getting up in front of a group to instruct and feel assertive enough to direct campers and kitchen staff during meals. There follows a brief job description.

INITIAL WEIGH-IN AND MEASUREMENTS - The first day of camp all campers have their weight, measurements and pictures taken.

DAILY NUTRITION CLASSES - Youngsters are scheduled to attend nutrition class two times a week. During the first class of each week, very basic nutrition education is taught. The nutritionist will be provided with lesson plans and objectives i.e. Behavior Modification, Food Groups, Diet Planning, and Reviewing Menus. The second class of each week is a discussion group, where campers have the opportunity to ask questions and express feelings. There are selected topics for each class such as: What do I tell my friends when I get home? How they feel about being overweight, why they want to be thin, etc.

COOKING CLASSES - Offers the campers an opportunity to prepare and serve their own meal while learning from the instructor. The nutritionist is responsible for submitting food requests and making sure all necessary equipment is available. Responsibilities also include keeping and maintaining all nutrition facilities in tip-top shape.

MENU PLANNING - Review existing menus and recommend changes.

KITCHEN OVERVIEW - To observe each meal when being served to make sure proper portions are being served, to direct kitchen staff to serve substitutions for kids with allergies or other special needs and to note food service practices and make recommendations.

FINAL WEIGH-IN AND MEASUREMENTS - The above process is repeated the last day of each session.

When not scheduled as explained above, Nutritionist will either accompany the children from their bunks to the activity they have scheduled, or be assigned to a specific area in camp if you have such a skill or preference.

Job Requirements:

Must be at least 25 + years of age. Must have emotional maturity, good moral character and integrity, be flexible and cooperative. Require that you possess strong leadership and organizational skills. You should enjoy a camp environment, be friendly, caring, kind, like children, and be lots of fun!
