Job Description:

Camp Shane runs two specialized camps for overweight children in the Catskill Mountains of New York and in Mayer, Arizona. The objectives of the camp are for the campers to lose weight, learn new skills, gain self-esteem and have fun.

General Responsibilities:
The Aquatics Director shall establish and oversee all activities in the pool, and supervise all staff and campers participating in these activities.

Specific Responsibilities, but not limited to:

  • Establish and train staff in safety standards & emergency procedures.
  • Orient program & counseling staff as to their responsibilities in the pool area.
  • Coordinate evaluation of swimming abilities of staff and youths upon their arrival.
  • Test and document that all water staff have demonstrated their ability in rescue and emergency procedure (use: Rescue and Emergency Skill Verification form) before camp starts.
  • Train assistant lifeguards/lookouts in basic water safety standards & out-of-water rescue techniques.
  • Monitor the maintenance of safety and sanitation standards, conducting regular checks and ensuring logbooks are properly kept.
  • Monitor use of equipment and supplies. Identify maintenance needs and report them to administration.
  • Communicate with administration and cabin staff as necessary regarding an individual youth's performance and/or special needs.
  • Complete evaluations with lifeguard team, with recommendations for next season
  • Midnight swim
  • Organize a buddy system.
  • Plan a schedule for instruction/water activities.
  • Teach classes/assist instructors.
  • Assign counselors to guard/or assist instructors during free swim and classes.
  • Organize swim meets with other camps and provide for the training of our team.
  • Communicate with local Red Cross in order to obtain literature, badges, etc.
  • Explain and delegate pool maintenance (vacuuming, sweeping and general cleanup) to pool staff. Oversee cleaning of the pool area at end of the season.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers.
  • Carry out other duties as designated.
  • Enforce camp safety regulations, including distribution of necessary safety equipment in appropriate sizes.
  • Develop and carry out lesson plans for different age groups and skill levels.
  • Instruct campers in emergency procedures.
  • Maintain equipment in good working order.
  • Supervise campers participating in activity at all times.
  • Report all lost or broken equipment.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques as trained by camp.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities.
  • Assist campers in an emergency (Fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
  • Follow, observe, and enforce all camp safety regulations.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 25 years old and completed at least one year of college
  • Three seasons of previous waterfront experience as a lifeguard and/or aquatics director.
  • Must be either a progressive swimming instructor (possess a current Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certificate) OR A qualified lifeguard (current Lifeguard Training certificate).
  • Possess a current Community CPR certificate.
  • Possess a current BLS for the Professional Rescuer certificate.
  • Possess a current First Aid certificate.
  • Must be an extremely responsible individual to insure the safety of all campers
  • Excellent role model for children. High moral standards, including no, drugs, smoking, inappropriate language.
  • Outstanding character and integrity.
  • Neat and professional appearance: No visible tattoos or body piercings
  • Desire, commitment, and ability to work with young people.
  • Enthusiasm for the outdoors and the program Camp Shane offers.
  • Compatibility with camp philosophy and mission.
  • Leadership and supervision skills.
  • Concern for safety and well-being of others.
  • Positive attitude and outlook.
  • Ability to communicate and work with children and provide necessary instruction.
  • Ability to seek and accept supervision and guidance.

  • Able to treat all campers and staff fairly.
  • Agree to a criminal background check and/or a Department of Motor Vehicles check.
