Camp Shane runs two specialized camps for overweight children in the Catskill Mountains of New York and in Mayer, Arizona. The objectives of the camp are for the campers to lose weight, learn new skills, gain self-esteem and have fun.
We use only hand tools, although as an instructor you would have access to power tools in the camp maintenance facility (e.g. to cut large boards to smaller size). You would be in charge of the program and would be working alone. There are six periods each day. Each period a different group of kids, approximately the same age, come to the shop. You need to be prepared with many different projects that they can do. Ages range from 8-16 and therefore so do their abilities. You need to have lots of project ideas (the library has many source books), need to instruct how to use hand tools, feel assertive and organized enough to direct and control each group, consisting of approximately 25 campers. Models and templates would have to be made before hand, work in progress must be stored, and the shop kept very clean and organized. You would need to determine your needs and propose material lists for purchasing.
Must have completed freshman year in college. Must have previous experience with power tools. Must possess emotional maturity, good moral character and integrity, be flexible and cooperative, have strong leadership and organizational skills. Enjoy a camp environment, be friendly, caring, kind, outgoing, like children and be lots of fun!
