JOB SUMMARY
Works in the seasonal capacity for the City's Parks Division performing a variety of maintenance operation functions.

Could be placed in any of the positions listed.

Salary may be higher based on experience.

Hours – up to 40 hours/wk, Mon-Thurs 6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. and Fri 6:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.


MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

If you are hired for a Parks position you will perform duties such as park cleanup, mowing, sports field maintenance, weeding, irrigation maintenance, pruning, planting, park equipment repair, minor construction and other duties as assigned.

If you are hired for a Forestry position you will perform duties such as installation and maintenance of plant materials, tree trimming, tree watering, insect control in parks and right-of-ways and other duties as assigned.

If you are hired for the Greenhouse position you will perform duties such as production and preparation of annual and perennial plant material, planting and maintenance of flower displays in parks and on street medians and interior foliage plant maintenance. Other duties include weeding,pruning, watering, mulching, deadheading and other duties as assigned.

If you are hired for a Right-of-Way position you will perform duties on City right-of-ways and street medians such as mowing, litter control, weeding, planting, irrigation, minor construction and other duties as assigned.

Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting. If injured on-the-job due to failure to utilize PPE a safety violation can be taken.



ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.

Experience
Related experience is preferred.

Licensure/Certification/Registration
Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.

Background check required.
Post-offer physical exam is required.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting
Must lift items from levels that include: floor level or from below the knee; knee through chest level and above the shoulder level that may weigh in excess of 50 pounds using assistance.
Items to be lifted may include, but are not limited to: bags of fertilizer, bags of seed, paint drums, tables, tree limbs.

Carrying, Maneuvering, Pushing and Pulling
May manipulate (push, pull or carry) items weighing excess of 75 pounds with assistance as described; bleachers, picnic tables, mower decks. Must be able to manipulate items weighing in excess of 75 pounds where manipulation should only be performed using mechanical or second person lift assistance: (jumping jack compactor, boulders, sander plates, concrete pipe and inlet grates). Must be able to carry items distances of plus/minus 25 feet. Items to be carried include; examples such as raking and shoveling asphalt, electric tools, rocks/drainage maintenance, pull swing gate, and manhole covers, pushes boxes, pulls wire, pulls or drags tree limbs.
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Body Positions
Required positions may include awkward postures.
Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. This factor is important if the amount and king of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.
Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. This factor is important if the amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
Kneeling: Bending legs forward by bending leg and spine.
Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time. Stands and moves about on both even and uneven terrain. Sits to operate equipment and drive between jobs. Drives to and between sites, which includes entering and exiting a vehicle multiple times per day.
Walking: Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances.
Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Must be able to handle and assemble small delicate parts.
Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers or palms. Uses torque to manipulate equipment and valves.
Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching the skin, particularly that of fingertips.
Repetitive Motions: Substantial repetitive movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Motions can be repetitive, e.g., such as when raking and/or shoveling.

Hearing
Must be able to hear and respond to in person and/or telephone communication. Must also hear radio transmissions and back-up alarms. Must be able to distinguish audible signals from equipment.

Vision
Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more) used for driving. Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point) needed for driving, scanning your surroundings, awareness of equipment in surroundings.



MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
Mathematics
Simple multiplication, division, subtraction and addition skills.

Remembering:
Ability to recall the timing of specific maintenance procedures can be important.

Language Ability
Have the ability to read and interpret written instructions.

Talking:
Must be able to communicate effectively among team members and other employees. Must be able to communicate effectively with public contacts in the field.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
Majority of work is performed outdoors under various weather conditions.
Other work environments include shop facilities and the greenhouse.
Exposure to various chemical agents occasionally that are utilized in the park management field occurs.
Works around water and electricity.
May work near traffic.
