Job Description Job Description HEAD LIFEGUARD JOB DESCRIPTION-SEASONAL Essential Functions Iowa Sports Management's Head Lifeguards are responsible for maintaining a safe environment in and around the pool area. They are responsible for the safety of all members/residents using the pool, including vigilant observation of pool users, enforcing all pool rules and policies, and performing lifesaving duties in accordance with American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification standards. They must also identify and respond to all emergencies quickly, professionally and decisively in accordance with ISM procedures, and administer first aid and CPR as required. Daily attendance is required. In addition to standard lifeguarding duties, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for managing, coordinating, and supervising all phases of operation including facility maintenance. He/she assists the General Manager in hiring, schedules and supervises all lifeguard staff. Other Primary Tasks • Identify and report potential accident hazards and safety issues. • Attentiveness to and prevention of accidents in and around the pool. • Responsible for certain pool related maintenance to ensure the facility and pool remain safe, clean, and a friendly environment for all patrons, including but not limited to adding water to the pool when necessary, sweeping pool floor and skimming out any debris, sweeping/mopping pool deck over the course of every shift and as needed and other tasks as needed or directed. • Constant communication with supervisor. Responsible for maintaining a safe, clean, and friendly environment in the facility and pool. • Manage and support all club staff including planning, scheduling, training, evaluation, performance managers, etc., Assures staff works as assigned, including monitoring, checking in, etc. even when Head Lifeguard is not physically present at the club. • Trains all staff on daily club procedures including but not limited to: emergency procedures, opening and closing routines, monitoring daily facility usage, completing incident logs, health inspection checklist, pool chemical readings, cleaning duties, and an hourly walkthrough protocol. • Responsible for assuring all pool operation and chemicals are within state and city Department of Health regulations / standards, and makes necessary corrections, adjustments to chemicals, etc. as needed. • Daily attendance. • Must remain thoroughly apprised of ISM and client policies and procedures, and updates thereto. • Constant communication with supervisor and other ISM office personnel, as needed. Secondary Tasks • A little service goes a long way; learn members’ routines and habits - e.g.: if you know that the resident always uses a kickboard, take one out for them and train the staff to do the same. • Remain thoroughly apprised and familiar with all ISM and client policies and procedures. • Fill out incident reports for any first aid or event that occurs in the facility or pool area. • Clean the surrounding fixtures in the pool, including, but not limited to any stainless steel and glass. • Maintain log of the daily usage/attendance at the pool. • Be proactive – if there is a hazard anywhere in the facility, notify facility Supervisor and correct the situation. • Ascertain needs for chemical supplies, office supplies, and maintenance lists / repairs and submit to supervisor for approval prior to submitting request to building management, as well as progress updates and completion of improvements. • Maintain communication log book regarding staff assignments in addition to verbal direction to staff. Qualifications Needed • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or equivalent. • Current American Red Cross CPR certification or equivalent. • Complete ISM’s pre-employment water skills assessment. • Sufficient fluency in English for water safety/lifesaving purposes. • Self-motivated with the ability to work without constant supervision. • Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills. • General knowledge of pool chemicals. • Ability to interact professionally with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues. Available and reachable by staff and management 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. • Subject to work odd hours (early mornings, late nights, and / or weekends). • Ability to interact professionally with patrons regarding concerns, problems, or any other significant issues. • Depending on facility, ability to be on your feet for up to 35 hours per week and lift in excess of 50lbs. • Have a working knowledge of swimming pool filter systems and be able to be in the presence of swimming pool chemicals such as chlorine, acid, etc. • Strong problem-solving, resolution oriented and interpersonal skills.
