Lifeguard/Swim Instructor Salary $16.50 - $18.00 Hourly Location Parks & Community Services, CA Job Type Part-Time Department Parks & Community Services Opening Date 05/09/2025 Closing Date 5/30/2025 3:00 PM Pacific FLSA Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit N/A Under general direction, oversees and leads activities at the City’s aquatics facility, including open swim, instructional classes in pool safety and swimming techniques, pool rentals, and use of the pool facility by other City programmatic activities; ensures the safety of individuals in the pool, on the deck, and in connected facilities; rescues distressed swimmers and performs life-saving aid; administers first aid; instructs and supervises aquatics classes and activities; a follows policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs other related duties as required. Primary Responsibilities The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is a part-time, at-will, specialist class responsible for ensuring the safety and welfare of participants and spectators at the City’s aquatics facility. The position may work early mornings, evenings, daytime, and weekends to support the public’s use of City facilities. Lifeguard/Swim Instructors must be dependable and timely in reporting to work in support of scheduled programming. The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor differs from the Head Lifeguard classification in that the latter acts in a lead role. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must demonstrate prior aquatics experience to support strong swimming skills, such as participation in competitive swimming, water polo, or other aquatic-type sporting event, or previous experience in an aquatics environment or as a certified lifeguard. Applicants must also demonstrate a willingness to work with individuals of all swim ability levels to teach water safety and basic swim techniques. Must possess an American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid training for the Professional Rescuer and Lifeguard Certification; other training programs may be approved by the Director of Human Resources if the curriculum and certification is deemed equivalent to those listed. The City Manager, upon recommendation of the department head, will make the final selection and appointment for this part time, at-will position.
