Job Description

The Roofing Technician II is responsible for performing a variety of roof repairs, replacements, maintenance, and installation of various roofing materials such as metal, shingles, slate, asphalt, aluminum, wood, and other related materials. Will insulate roofs and install vapor barriers, on and off LU campus Facilities. Will assist other Roofing technicians to include the Roofing Tech III/ Lead and/or the Roofing Supervisor. Will perform other duties as assigned. Working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job. Essential Functions and Responsibilities 1. As essential personnel: you are expected to be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and any emergencies including clean up required because of severe weather incidents. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Such as shoveling, salting, etc. Maintenance Technicians are essential to the overall success of Liberty University and its day-to-day functions, especially during ongoing campus events such as Winter Fest, Orientation, Convocation, Commencement, CFAW, and summer camps amongst other planned and unplanned events throughout the year. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise. 2. Reports to work at the required time and performs duties as assigned by the Roofing Supervisor, Maintenance Manager or Sr. VP of Facilities Operations. 3. Responsible for wearing the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing the job duties and responsibilities of the Roofing trade and while operating related equipment including but not limited to; protective eye wear, ear protection, hard hat, gloves, steel toe shoes, respirators/ masks, reflective safety vests, and sunscreen. 4. Responsible for wearing an anchorage, connecting device, body harness with a lanyard and other PPE if operating aerial lifts to perform & complete assigned jobs. 5. Assists other roofing technicians and/or roofing Supervisor in roofing related tasks. 6. Responsible for repairing, installing, restoring, and maintaining various roof systems using a wide range of materials. 7. Responsible for scaling roofs to repair leaky roofs, replace broken tiles, or seal areas to make them airtight. 8. Ability to identify deficiencies in a roof and then make repairs and/or repair recommendations. 9. Assists in the inspection of roofs to determine the best repair or replacement procedures. 10. Ability to perform interior inspections and diagnose leaks. 11. Ability to perform maintenance inspections and services. 12. Responsible for calculating the total amount of materials and labor needed to complete a job. 13. Ensures that all required tools are present for completing a job. 14. Ensures that each job is completed safely, thoroughly and in a timely manner. 15. Ability to work on small siding and gutter projects. 16. Knowledge and experience installing tapered insulation layouts. 17. Ability to operate power equipment including stone carts, roof cutters and gravelers. 18. Knowledge of roofing installations. 19. Patches built-up roofs with hot and cold applications. 20. Installs vapor barriers and/or layers of insulation on the roof decks of roofs. 21. Delivering materials to job site, supplying roofers with materials as well as ladders and scaffolds. 22. Transports and load/ unload roofing materials in work truck. 23. Cleans-up debris from the roof surface and surrounding property once roof tasks have been completed. 24. Cleans rooftops by removing leaves, ice, and other debris. 25. Cover exposed nail heads with roofing cement or caulking to prevent water leakage and rust. 26. Assist with the installation of partially overlapping layers of material over roof insulation surfaces. 27. Assists with covering roofs and exterior walls of structures with metal, slate, asphalt, aluminum, wood, gravel, gypsum, and/or related materials, using brushes, knives, punches, hammers, and other tools. 28. Repairs cracks, defects, damage, using proper material. 29. Apply adhesives, caulking, sealants, or coatings. 30. Sprays treatment chemicals on roofs and buildings to seal them from water and weather. 31. Caulking expansion joints, belt course, and coping stone. 32. Knowledge of the basic safety techniques and procedures. 33. Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines according to instructions received. 34. Ability to organize, plan, and execute work assignments. 35. Ability to read and use tape measure; mark and/ or record distances. 36. General basic knowledge of construction materials and tools involved in the construction or repair of structures. 37. Ability to identify problems and communicate them to the Roofing Tech III/ Lead and/or Supervisor. 38. Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner according to instructions received. 39. Must provide own hand tools to perform and complete trade related tasks. 40. Relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish goals. 41. Performs other duties as assigned. 42. Remains abreast of existing and emerging technologies, processes, products, services, and leading industry performance benchmarks. 43. Works effectively as a team member, embracing and fostering LU's mission. Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies High School diploma or GED. Minimum of 2 years of related experience required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in the roofing trade or general construction. Must be able to understand and follow directions, and work under limited Supervision. Must be able to work well with the public and co-workers and present a positive attitude. Knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and Access) and excellent computer skills is required. Clean and professional appearance. Must be courteous, detailed oriented. Diligent, trustworthy, possess strong organizational skills and well-developed communication skills. Must be self-motivated, open minded, and able to accept constructive criticism. Must be able to lift to 75 pounds and perform duties of the Roofing trade in typical Virginia Climate. This position might require the use of and operation of aerial lifts or be willing and able to obtain aerial lift certifications, operate, and work from various aerial lifts and heights. Desire to work with a team to accomplish goals. Urgency to grow and improve. Certifications obtained while employed by Liberty University at the expense of the employer will be reimbursed back to the University upon voluntary termination (resignation) for the first 12 months after acquiring it. Proof of a valid Virginia driver's license, an acceptable DMV record, and liability insurance is required. Must be able to work on weekends, holidays, and flexible daily/evening hours.
