Job Description Job Description Basic Purpose: The Director of Christian Education will provide enthusiastic leadership for the Christian Education program of the church, especially as it relates to Children’s and Youth Ministry Programs. This is accomplished through developing caring relationships with children, youth and their families, facilitating their growth in faith and involvement in the life of the church, planning and implementing educational, fellowship, and service opportunities (including missions and mission trips), recruiting, supporting and training volunteers. It is expected that the DCE will work as a part of a staff and volunteers in order to develop and grow these ministries. This job description represents the direction for Christian Education and implies a steady development of these responsibilities since the position is part-time. Yearly goals are expected to be coordinated with the Pastor and Staff Parish Relations Committee. Sunday and Wednesday evening (children, youth and their parents): 1. Develop a unified educational program of Christian study, nurture and fellowship, particularly to meet the needs of children, youth, and their parents. 2. Promote attendance and develop intentional plans for growth. 3. Recruit, train and support new volunteers. 4. Work with the classes in consultation with the pastor to choose curriculum and resources and oversee the ordering and distribution of materials needed. 5. Oversee the arrangement of classes and the record system of attendance. 6. Organize and maintain a Resource Room and assist in its usage. 7. Be available to teach classes when needed. Children: 1. Develop and implement ministries to further the spiritual growth of children and recruit, train and supervise volunteers. This includes but is not limited to Vacation Bible School, mission projects, Sunday night or week night activities, activities around the liturgical year, summer programs and resources for families. 2. Lead Children’s Time in worship as scheduled with the pastor. 3. Recruit, train, volunteers and provide materials as/and if needed. 4. Work with the church office to make sure Children’s worship bags are kept up-to-date, engaging and user friendly. 5. Lead in the coordination of seasonal events: Big Hug Sunday, Easter Egg Hunt, Promotion Sunday, Trunk or Treat, Christmas Birthday Party for Jesus, Spontaneous Christmas Pageant, etc. 6. Promote learning about the Bible, especially offering short-term classes, such as Learning to Use My Bible for 3rd graders after they receive their Bibles from the church. 7. Recruit directors and teachers for Vacation Bible School, assist in the scheduling and organizing of VBS and serve as a resource person for teachers or age groups. 8. Work with volunteers to provide for nursery age children during Sunday school and worship services. Youth: 1. Develop and implement ministries to further the spiritual growth of youth. This includes but is not limited to Sunday evening youth group(s), retreats, conference retreats/events, special trips and activities. 2. Recruit and train adults to work with youth groups, working with leaders to plan and oversee the youth meetings. 3. Cooperate with community youth groups when the number of youth at the church is too small to build upon. 4. Plan children/youth Sunday with the pastor and Creative Arts Team. 5. Work with the pastor to offer confirmation for the youth. Other Responsibilities: 1. Work with the Pastor in coordinating programs and worship experiences for children and youth. 2. Participate in staff meetings and assist in planning of special and seasonal church programs. 3. Take ownership of the church’s missions in order to involve children, youth and their families in community service projects 4. Identify ways to bring more children and youth from the surrounding area into the church’s ministries. 5. Coordinate with the children and youth leaders to submit a budget annually and manage disbursement of budgeted funds through prompt requests. 6. Maintain and educate laity for compliance with the church’s safe sanctuary guidelines, making sure all leaders of children and youth have been trained and completed the process. Personal and Profession Study 1. Develop an ongoing program from personal professional study and growth. 2. Participate in professional groups for support and continued learning. 3. Maintain Safe Gatherings for self and all volunteers Qualifications: 1. A deep commitment to and enthusiasm for the Christian faith with knowledge of the Bible. 2. Be fun loving and active and an energetic and enthusiastic leader with the ability to relate to children, youth and their families. 3. Have high organizational and communication skills (verbal and written). 4. Be a creative, self-starter and a team player in work with the pastor, staff and volunteers. 5. Have a love for children, a passion for youth ministry, and a passion for spiritual formation. 6. Be able to attend school and youth activities not church related. 7. Education and/or experience in Christian Education or the equivalent education and/or experience . 8. A United Methodist or have an appreciation of the United Methodist Church, the church’s structure and theology. 9. Satisfactory completion of criminal background check. Supervisors: Pastor Hours: Part-time, 25 hour work week. Salary:. Salary $18K to $22K yearly. 6 month probationary period. Vacation time: One Sunday per quarter OR the equivalent of one work week after 6 months of employment. After 1 1⁄2 years additional 3 days will be negotiated.
