Job Description Job Description SEASONAL LIFEGUARD COMMUNITY PARKS HOURLY: $ 13.00 per hour GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The overall purpose and general responsibilities Under general supervisor and procedural control from the Park Superintendent. Ensures the safety of the guest who visits the pools. Ensures proper maintenance of the pool operation. Employee is primarily responsible to prevent accidents in the water, and the immediate pool deck by enforcement of pertinent rules and regulations. The second most important responsibility of the lifeguard is the lifesaving rescue and emergency care of accident victims. This is a non-supervisory position and is seasonal. The location for this position is at Santa Rosa, Santa Maria, and El Ranchito (a/k/a Francisca Esparza Domanski Community Park). Rotating work schedule and location may be required when needed. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: General point of contact Reports to the Community Park Superintendent. Communicates with the public, park guests, and other co-workers. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The fundamental duties and tasks which define the job Maintain strict but courteous enforcement of all and any Park and Pool rules and regulations. Follow orders and requests of the Park Superintendent. Maintains constant alert, is on the lookout, and ready to assist swimmers in trouble or involved in accidents in the water or on pool deck. Each lifeguard must be attentive to actions taken by fellow guards. Performs with extreme prudence, emergency services by rescuing, resuscitating or administering first aid as may be required. On serious accidents, the staff, under direct leadership of the manager, shall be responsible for calling professional emergency medical assistance. Assists in maintaining the pool, pool deck, and entire facility in a safe and sanitary condition by performing tasks as requested by the manager or his/her superior. Maintains order in the pool facility, foresees possible trouble and takes necessary steps to prevent it. Maintains courteous, friendly and cheerful attitude to all pool patrons and fellow employees in the performance of his/her duties. Reports potentially hazardous and unsafe conditions to the Park Superintendent or Park Director. Maintains an acceptable appearance at all times as to both uniforms and personal hygiene. All lifeguards must wear a modest swim suit or uniform, if adopted or recommended by the Parks and Recreation Department, at all times while on duty. Attends all in-service training sessions scheduled by superiors. When assigned, carries out cashier duties, prepares cash register, collects admission fees, answers telephones and tabulates daily receipts. Assists on other projects and job related tasks in the department when requested. Assists in meeting overall program objectives, safety and quality. JOB REQUIREMENTS: The requirements necessary to fulfill the job expectations Must meet minimum age requirement of 16 years. Job requires current certification in: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, including American Red Cross Standard First Aide, and CPR. Note: Certification is preferred; however, if individual does not posses current certification; he/she must be able to obtain certification within 45 days of employment through county sponsored training. Must demonstrate excellent physical conditions, mobile, agile, vision and hearing. Must be able to pass a swimming test related to the facility and the responsibilities. Must have a good judgment and knowledge of and willingness to enforce all rules and regulations of the pool. Must be knowledgeable and capable of properly using cash register, safety whistle, and information for teaching programs. Must be alert, active, responsible and mature individual. Must exhibit special leadership qualities. Must be a strong swimmer with keen sense of anticipation. Must be able to promote good public relations for the County. Must be able to meet the public in a courteous manner, using tact and diplomacy. JOB CONDITIONS Employee works outdoors, irregular hours or shifts and is on call (waiting to be engaged to work) when not in duty. Employee is exposed to hazards which might result in burning of the skin. Work involves normal weather changes. Work involves sitting, standing and swimming and demands physical strength and agility normally associated with superior swimming. PERIOD OF EMPLOYMENT This is a part-time seasonal position; the length of employment will be determined by the program's success in attracting participants and providing services. If the program fails to enroll enough participates to justify cost, the program, at that individual site, will be cancelled, and those personnel terminated or reassigned to another location. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Must have experience in custodianship and must enjoy working with the public. Preferred experience in life guarding. LICENSES AND / OR CERTIFICATIONS: American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, including American Red Cross Standard First Aide, and CPR. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Must be able to follow oral instructions. Ability to communicate effectively, both in English and Spanish. Must be able to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with other employees.
