Job Description Job Description Salary: $20.00-$26.00 Overview of the Position The Sailing Director will oversee the curriculum development, program delivery/operations, and staffing for our Sailing classes and Sailing Team for youth ages 5-17. Serves with a major responsibility for customer service, community outreach/promotion, curriculum development, Staff/Instructor training and development, leading Sailing Team practices on the water, Staff scheduling, class and Staff supervision, and class/activity scheduling. Ensures that Newport Sea Base programs meet the highest health and safety standards. Enforce National BSA policies, all state and local boating safety laws, and environmental regulations, as applicable. Reports directly to the NSB Senior Program Director. The position requires the candidate to be the Head Coach for the NSB Sailing Team. Must be at least 21 years old, have CPR and First Aid Certification. Lifeguard Certification will need to be completed and kept updated. US Sailing Small Boat Level 1 Instructor certificate is required, and US Sailing Small Boat Level 2 Coach and/or US Sailing Big Boat Instructor recommended. Primary Responsibilities/Duties Water safety is 1 and will be the primary focus for this position. Safety and upkeep of all of our boats will be a top priority.The training of our Staff on the water to provide safe programs will be the top goal; ensuring our Staff safely operate all boats especially motor boats around youth is essential. Referencing Scouting America and ACA safety guidelines. Assists Senior Program Director in planning sailing and boating classes on the annual calendar; goal is to load up our schedule strategically to utilize as many of our boats as we can on a daily basis which will in turn help us serve more youth and drive revenue. Actively promotes the entire sailing program via phone calls, email, newsletters, social media, website, strategic campaigns and flyering and much more! Will assist in ensuring NSB Sailing hits budgeted revenue numbers; bi-weekly budget meetings with Senior Program Director Plans and facilitates year round trainings on boater safety, whaler handling, sailing best practices - all part of the Staff training line up. Lead Head Coach for the NSB Sailing Team, ages 7-17. Practice runs 3:30pm-6:30pm, Tues-Fri with once a month weekend regattas. Leads participant recruitment for Novice & Varsity Teams. Plans practice activities and regattas for the entire year. For regattas, will load trailers, and serve as designated driver as needed to offsite locations. For Sailing Team, conducts ongoing, regular communication regarding team highlights, progress, and regatta schedule for the year. Oversees all weekday and weekend NSB sailing ONLY classes/activities year round including but not limited to: Sailing Level 1, Sailing Level 2, Family Sailing, Keelboat Sailing, Sailing Team, and sailing custom group reservations. Schedules staff for these programs and events. Provides upkeep and maintenance on the sailing fleet which consists of 14 RS Teras, 8 RS Quests, 11 CFJs, 2 Harbor 20s,3 Olson 30s. Conducts regular inspections to ensure all boats are in good condition. Must ensure that boats are operational for classes. In conjunction with the NSB Senior Program Director and Maintenance Director, assists in the upkeep and repair of Boston Whalers and engines. Assists staff in preparation and successful implementation of classes. Assists in training, coaching, and evaluation of staff. May personally instruct various classes or special event activities, in addition. If a sailing is short staffed or staff call in sick, may need to sub in to teach the class if no other substitute staff are available to switch in. Regularly observes programs for quality assurance and safety of operations using NSB Program Site Assessment Form; results to be reviewed with the Senior Program Director regularly. Aids with individual staff evaluations. Assists Senior Program Director in promoting job openings for instructors when needed; helps conduct interviews with Senior Program Director. Ensure staff roster is filled with multiple instructors to teach every class throughout the year. Creates and or updates curriculum/lesson plans that are exciting and mission-focused in order to expand usage of the facility, increase number of youth participating in program, and increase revenue. Develops curriculum that is fun, varied, and involve youth of various ages. Communicates thoroughly any proposed program changes. Has an eye on Scouting America Sailing Merit Badge requirement changes as National updates these periodically. Oversees student-discipline procedures and be responsible for written tracking of such. Be responsible for program supply inventory, request supplies with proper lead time for ordering, and manage expenses to stay within budget. All expenses must be approved in advance. Ensures proper set-up, usage, and clean-up of the facility, equipment, and docks. Creates annual, quantifiable programmatic and professional goals to be reviewed quarterly with the Senior Program Director; meets program and revenue objectives. Schedule will be Tues-Sat during September-May; Mon-Fri during June-August for Summer Camp; Flexible hours - up to 40 hours per week. Other duties as assigned.
