Job Description Job Description The Water Safety Instructor of Overbrook School for the Blind exudes a passion for the school, its students, and its employees. This position will report directly to the Aquatic Center Coordinator. The Mission of Overbrook School for the Blind (OSB) is to develop and deliver education that enhances the options available for persons with visual impairments, including those with additional challenges so that they have the greatest opportunity to experience active and fulfilling lives. Organizational Description: Overbrook School for the Blind serves students who are blind or visually impaired with or without additional disabilities (such as intellectual disability, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment, sensory issues, and including those who require specialized medical care) receive a customized, individualized education based on state educational standards. OSB is more than a school, it is a community where students, families, and staff support one another and come together to build a bright future. Job Functions: Responsible to maintaining a safe and healthy environment for all types of swimming. Responsible for teaching/instructing all schedule swim groups during scheduled periods – along with Staff Swim class offerings. Responsible for supervising all swimmers during all swim periods. Responsible for completing assessments, reporting of student progress, monitoring swim clearances, organization and completion of the Monthly Cleaning Chart and Monthly Mile-Swim. Responsible for keeping the Lifejacket user type list current and updating as needed. Care, maintenance and cleanliness of pools and pool areas Keeping up to date records for the Daily Summary Reports Keeping careful and accurate records of student progress Planning, organizing and implementing swim class lessons and activities Enforcing all pool and facility rules and regulations Ability to plan and adapt programs for students Supervision of students (all swimmers) during swim periods Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree required. Current certification in Advanced Lifesaving and/or Lifeguard Training and WSI/Water Safety Instructor - from the American Red Cross, YMCA, or Ellis and Associates is required. Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid/AED Certification required. Preferred Qualifications: Current Driver’s license preferred. Minimum one year experience with the Special Needs and VI population preferred. Physical Requirements & Work Environment: Lifting: must be able to lift 50-lbs minimum. Participate in 2 person lifts. Working Environment: Employees are subject to accidents and/or injuries, which may be incurred during the performance of the essential functions of the position. Work is primarily indoors but some outdoor activities may be required. Must be able to hear an active victim’s cry for help and see a passive victim in trouble. Must be agile, physically able to bend, squat, stretch, reach, push up and stand for several hours at a time. Must be able to read, write, enter dates and follow verbal/written directions prepare written reports and complete written forms in English.
