Job Description:
The 92nd Street Y Camps takes place on our grounds in Rockland County. The Gardening Camp Activity Instructor is responsible for the planning, leading, and implementing of age-appropriate instruction of Gardening for campers. He/she will also be responsible for the general safety and development, growth, and skill achievement of the participants that attend his/her specialty program. The incumbent will provide high quality educational and recreational experiences for participants. The Gardening Camp Activity Instructor will be responsible for starting, maintaining and cleaning up the garden in the spring and fall.
Camp runs from Monday to Friday, for 7.5 weeks from June 27 until August 16, 2019. There will be mandatory staff training in June.
Essential Formula:
• Create and implement age appropriate curricula for the garden
• Lead and direct up to 6 group lessons each day at camp for groups of 15 to 18 campers ranging in age from 5 to 11; both typically developing campers and campers with special needs.
• Provide support and assistance to campers while respecting their privacy and sense of self-worth so that they can meaningfully engage in your activity
• Assume responsibilities for the health, safety and well-being of campers while they are present at your activity area
• Communicate regularly to Program Director observations and concerns with regard to the needs and problems of individual campers and/or counselors
• Actively seek to incorporate STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) practices and concepts into the learning objectives of your activity area
• Actively seek to incorporate Jewish values including: compassion, leadership, courage, mindfulness and being a mensch into the learning objectives of your activity area
• Come prepared every day to fully participate in the Camp’s activities including responsibilities outside your activity area for special events or inclement weather (rain or extreme heat)
• Participate in staff orientation program and read and understand the policies of Camp as set forth in the Staff manual and at all times comply with its rules and regulations, including dress code and emergency procedures
• Exude enthusiasm for Camp life and activities including participation in two “Parent Visiting Evenings

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree preferred
• Experience teaching gardening in a school, camp, or youth program environment
• Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
• Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks independently
• Ability to lead a gardening team in growing a garden that provides unique experiences for campers.
• Interest and ability in coordinating with the Cooking Activity Specialist to plant produce that can be used in cooking projects.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
