Summer Camp Nurse - Unique, fun and challenging summer work experience at beautiful residential summer camp!

How would you like to work in a fun, exciting, fast-paced, summer camp environment this summer? We are actively looking for Nurses to join our camp family for summer 2021. Working at Camp Towanda as a one of our Nurses is a unique job experience, caring for children ages 7-17 in our state-of-the-art health center.

Welcome to Camp Towanda!

Our family owned, co-ed, 7 week, sleep-away camp for kids ages 7-17, is celebrating 99 years! We are nestled on over 400 acres of beautiful fields, facilities, waterfront in the rolling Pennsylvania countryside. We attract down-to-earth, friendly and spirited campers, families and staff. We have approximately 450 campers, boys and girls ages 7-17. We typically hire over 300 staff from over 25 states and 25 countries! We have a great support system and caring professionals that will be by your side every step of the way. This is not just a job; it's being part of a supportive family, all working AND living on site!

CAMP NURSE LIFE

The role of a Nurse at Camp Towanda is a balance of teamwork and commitment; some tasks include daily sick call, first aid, medication distribution, medical record keeping and some good old fashioned TLC. It's definitely not a traditional working environment as you are living and working at the same place. You are joining a giant family, where everyone knows each other, cares about each other and works hard to create a fulfilling and meaningful summer for our campers and staff. Check out these videos for a glimpse into Camp Nurse life!

A typical day usually starts around 7 or 8 AM depending on when we blow Reveille! We then all eat together in the Mess Hall. You will rotate with the other Nurses for medication distribution during mealtimes. After breakfast and dinner, campers will come to the Health Center for Sick Call. During the morning and afternoon activity periods, the Nurse team has a chance to catch up on paperwork and hang out with any campers staying over in the Health Center. If you are off during that time you are welcome to explore the facilities! After dinner we have an all camp evening activity which might be a talent show, carnival or something of the sort! Life at camp is a nice balance of duty and fun! The exact rotation and scheduling of your down time happens once we are all at camp and the whole team is together.
  • 6 days a week with housing, meals, laundry and entertainment included with the experience!
  • Our 2021 dates are June 13th - August 13th, including orientation.
  • To get the most out of your experience, we ideally look for those available for the full season. However, we can offer weekly spots if need be.

THE HEALTH CENTER

Also known as "The Infirmary", our modern Health Center facility is located in the center of camp and staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with a team of Doctors, EMT, Nurses and several nursing students. Our facility offers heat, a/c and Wi-Fi access, as well as private accommodations.

CAMP AND COVID

In May of 2020 we made the tough decision to close Camp for the season. You can view our closing message here. Looking ahead to 2021, we are confident that we will be prepared and ready for the challenges. We are excited to work closely with our Medical Team to safely make this summer the best one yet! Now more than ever, the importance of Camp is evident; the fresh air, connecting with nature, impacting our youth and fostering a healthy, nurturing environment for the next generation to grow.

BENEFITS OF WORKING AT TOWANDA

Being part of the Camp Towanda team is so much more than a summer job- it's a family, network and community that will change your life forever. You are not just another employee, we will help nurture, guide and be there for you. Every camper and staff member will know you by name. It is a giant family...did we stress that enough yet? You will have the opportunity to be part of our culture and join in our special events and activities.
  • All meals, lodging, laundry and fun activities are included, with scheduled time off.
  • We are located in the popular summer destination region of the Pocono Mountains and less than 2 hours away from New York City and Philadelphia.
  • Depending on qualifications, experience, availability and whether you have campers or not, compensation is typically $1100 per week plus travel reimbursement to camp and since PA is not yet a compact state, we will reimburse those licensing fees, too.

THE IDEAL CAMP PERSON

Working at camp is not for everyone. The days are long and we often say that we pack 3 days into one! The weather can fluctuate, it can be sunny and beautiful, it can be rainy, it can be hot, it can be humid. What helps people succeed in the camp environment is being flexible and adaptable. We would love to say it is 8 hour shifts, however the reality of camp is being involved with all aspects of the program. There are times we need all hands on deck (i.e Sick Call) and times when most of the Nurses will be able to have off (i.e. during activity periods). Once the team is all set we figure out a balanced and fair schedule .

We are all in the trenches together and the impact we have on the children and staff truly is rewarding ...if you buy into it!
