Job Description

Position: Aquatics (Lifeguard) Director

Location: BCNY Camp at Harriman State Park, 553 Arden Valley Road, Peekskill, NY 10566

Salary Range: Contracted

Hours: 35 hours per week (F/T schedule - contract position)

Dates: July 10 - August 19, 2022 (6 weeks)

Employment Type: Summer Season, Residential (Overnight / Sleep Away Camp)

Mandatory Training: June 2022

About Us

The Boys’ Club of New York (BCNY), founded in 1876, is a youth development organization with the mission to empower boys and young men through outside of school programming at our clubhouses and our residential summer camp in Harriman State Park. BCNY’s Harriman Base Camp’s vision is to foster emotional, physical and ethical growth through thoughtful and diverse activities and programs for boys and young men age 10 through 17. BCNY campers will develop life skills and awareness of social responsibility through outdoor exploration and education. While appreciating their natural surroundings, they will become active stewards of the environment.

Job Summary of Aquatics (Lifeguard) Director

The Aquatics (Lifeguard) Director reports to the Camp Director, directs the aquatic camp programs and the associated day to day activities; actively participates in the overall planning and administration of the pool camp programs; and has supervisory responsibility for assigned staff. The Aquatics (Lifeguard) Director will cultivate programs and relationships with young people that are strength-based and restorative. They will have a deep commitment to diversity and equity and integrate the cultural background of young people within the program design. ?Must be available for mandatory training sessions in June.?

Job Requirements

BCNY is a COVID-19 proactive organization that follows applicable health and safety regulations to help protect our members and staff. To that end, we require that all BCNY employees be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. As of May 2, 2022, BCNY will require all staff to receive a booster shot that protects against COVID-19 once they become eligible. New employees will be asked to submit proof of full vaccination prior to their start date. BCNY treats proof of vaccination confidentially and consistent with applicable law, and will not use the information for any purpose other than to ensure compliance with BCNY’s mandatory vaccination policy.


  • Establish and oversee all staff and camper swimming and activities at the camp’s waterfront
  • Assist in the training of waterfront staff during staff orientation week
  • Oversee the set up and breakdown of all waterfront areas at the beginning and at end of the summer
  • Ensure aquatic staff follow proper procedures and safety guidelines
  • Ensure aquatic staff are using appropriate methods for recording and checking accurately who is at the water activity and any one time
  • Ensure that all waterfront areas meet all local and state guidelines
  • Be responsible for the health & safety of campers, staff & guests at water activities
  • Responsible for managing, supporting and evaluating a team of 4-5 aquatic staff
  • Create?a positive work atmosphere that?fosters?teamwork, a constructive exchange of ideas?and ensures?that all staff members adhere to behavior,?discipline, and safety policies



  • Bachelor’s degree?in Recreation/Physical Education or related field desirable?
  • Minimum 2 years related work experience, preferably working with youth?
  • Previous experience supervising staff?and a collaborative team-oriented management approach, strengths-based approach to youth development


  • Ability to pass a background check, physical exam and be up to date on all required immunizations.
  1. all staff must provide proof of their MMR and COVID-19 immunization
  • According to NY State must be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of:?
  • one season experience as a camp aquatics director at a NYS camp; or??
  • two seasons experience consisting of at least 12 weeks as a children’s camp lifeguard at a pool or beach which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time; or?
  • 18 weeks of previous experience as a lifeguard at a pool or beach, which had more than one lifeguard supervising it at a time.?
